Geothermal Anywhere company was granted by total US$ 3,700,000 in order to do applied research in the field of ultra deep drilling, for three ULTRADRILL technology pillars. The flagship pillar project “Applied research and development of innovative drilling technology for ultra deep geothermal wells” has been awarded with value of more than US$ 2,100,000.

In other words, it is focused on development of rock disintegration technology, the core of ULTRADRILL platform. It should become the first robotic platform, capable of drilling to depths of 6-10 kilometers, by economically viable way. This time, the traditional drilling methods are based on contact disintegration of the rock. ULTRADRILL is absolutely different; it exploits non-contact rock disintegration methods.

The flagship project aims to develop the new type of “drilling jet” that should replace the traditional drill bits. Geothermal Anywhere leads knowledge, interdisciplinary technology transfer, project and technology management to reach set targets. Drilling jet, created on the base of the plasma electric discharge, would shot directly to the rock introducing high temperatures and high pressures. In addition, thanks to knowledge and innovative synergy of both plasma expansion and acceleration, this type of jet can be generated in water environment that is important attribute of geothermal drilling. This fact enables to ULTRADRILL system operate in the drill-hole filled with water. If we talk about ultra deep bore holes, which mean 6-10 kilometers, they are filled with water naturally. Instead of thinking how water can be pumped out of the well, ULTRADRILL exploits this property in cooperative way. Water jet is one example, transporting of fuels and materials down, or disintegrated rock up are the other ones.

All-in-all, the first among the granted projects should generate knowledge transfer in order to research and develop ULTRADRILL breakthrough-concept and introduce it in practice.

The project is administrated by technology company Geothermal Anywhere, leading the cooperation with of Slovak Academy of Science, Comenius University as well as Slovak Technical University. The expected project duration is 36 months. The project leader now focuses on finding the strategic experienced leaders in EGS system as well as financial investors.
